On 15th July, the Aegis Trust hosted education activist and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai at the Kigali Genocide Memorial.

Starting her visit with a short film detailing the Memorial’s history and its significance to survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, Malala then laid a wreath at the burial place where 250,000 victims of the genocide have their final resting-place.

She was then taken through the permanent exhibitions by the Kigali Genocide Memorial’s manager, Dieudonné Nagiriwubuntu, learning more about the origins, occurrence and aftermath of the genocide.

Malala was also introduced to the work of Aegis in developing peace education at the Memorial which now features in the education of every child in Rwanda.

“I pray for lasting peace, harmony, and humanity,” Malala wrote in the Memorial’s guest book at the end of her visit. “It is important to educate ourselves about the tragedies, horrors and genocides of the past so that we don’t repeat history. I send my prayers to those who are still healing.”
