By investing in social enterprises which support the Aegis Trust, you can play a vital role in ensuring the sustainability of our mission and work. In Rwanda, these include visitor services, the café and gift shop at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, together with value accommodation for travellers in Kigali (the Discover Rwanda Youth Hostel), Gisenyi (Discover Rwanda Gisenyi Beach) and Kayonza (Discover Rwanda Kayonza Eco-Lodge). In the UK, our social enterprises centre on charity shops – the White Rose recycled fashion outlets in Nottingham. Our plans to expand social enterprise activity in the UK and Rwanda offer significant opportunities for social investment. It’s a brilliant way to support Aegis, ensuring that the money you put in continues to work for us, rather than simply being spent once. And it can offer you a financial return.
Established by the Aegis Trust at the invitation of the Rwandan authorities, and opened in 2004 on the tenth anniversary of the start of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, the Kigali Genocide Memorial stands alongside mass graves which form the final resting-place for some 250,000 of the million people who were murdered in just 100 days. A site of remembrance and learning for Rwandans and internationals alike, the Memorial includes three permanent exhibitions set in landscaped memorial gardens. Its new classrooms and open-air amphitheatre, completed in April 2014, are just the first phase of a much larger planned site expansion. The Memorial is also home to the Genocide Archive of Rwanda. It is open seven days a week, excluding public holidays.
Why not get sponsored in support of Aegis to do something you love, or to take on the challenge of a lifetime? Better still, why not gather a group of friends or colleagues to take part with you? Whether providing much-needed core support, or focussing your fundraising efforts on a particular aspect of our work (for example, taking peacebuilding from Rwanda to countries in crisis), you would be surprised just how much it’s possible to raise with a little bit of planning and preparation… and we will support you all the way with the necessary materials and advice.

“Today Aegis has an unrivalled opportunity to break cycles of violence and prevent mass atrocities in three countries at risk – but to do so we need your help, and we need to move fast.”

Dr James Smith Founder & CEO, Aegis Trust
