screen_shot_2012-12-07_at_17_159_100.pngIn this video, young Rwandans talk about the value of taking part – for them and their community.“It is now 18 years after the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. Nearly half the country are under 15 and too young to remember directly, but they are surrounded by the fall-out of genocide’s toxic legacy,” says Dr James Smith, Chief Executive of the Aegis Trust.

“The future is in their hands. It’s up to them to eliminate ideas that foster fear and hatred. By supporting peace education today, we can put tools in the hands of these young people to help prevent a return to mass violence in the future.”

£20 is all it takes to give one Rwandan school pupil the chance to take part in Aegis’ peace education programme.

Independent analysis shows Aegis’ peace-building education programme is helping to change hearts and minds, not only among participating students, but among their peers in the schools from which they come.

In the words of Freddy Mutanguha, head of Aegis in Rwanda, “This is not just learning about an historical event. It’s about preventing genocide in my country for generations to come.”
