Genocide - Definitions

Acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group:

  • Killing members of the group
  • Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group
  • Deliberately inflicting conditions calculated to bring about its physical destruction
  • Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group
  • Forcibly transferring children of this group to another group.

(Article II of the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide)

These acts are usually committed by governments or their collaborators, seeking to destroy a part or whole of the population under its control.

Perpetrators of genocide do not respect age, gender, occupation, religion or status.  Every member of the group will be targeted for killing – women, children and old people are all killed.  A feature of genocide that is widely recognized now is the mass rape of women that is often encouraged by organizers of genocide.
