Since Aegis launched the campaign we have held two successful events which have contributed to the debate and achieved results:
On 21st October 2008, Sir Ken Macdonald QC, gave one of his last speeches as Director of Public Prosecutions 'UK law on international crimes: More than just words?' to the APPG on Genocide Prevention and the Parliamentary Human Rights Group. You can read his speech and the event report here. Sir Ken's speech led in part to the decision of the Joint Committee on Human Rights to launch an inquiry into UK legislation on genocide, torture and related offences committed abroad.
On 2nd December 2008, Aegis convened a high-level conference in partnership with Doughty Street Chambers: '60 years on: Is the Genocide Convention working?'. The final panel: 'Does the UK need a new law on international crimes?' was chaired by Elizabeth Wilmshurst (Chatham House) and panelists, Lord Carlile QC and Professor Nick Grief explored our proposals about strengthening UK law.
