Email your MP: War Crimes Unit in UK

There are a substantial number of suspected war criminals in the UK. In the last five years the immigration authorities have found over 500 suspects. Yet only one suspect has been prosecuted.  Please write to your MP asking them to set up a specialist police war crimes unit.

Many countries have specialist war crimes units, including the USA (established 1979), Netherlands (1997), Canada (1998), Belgium (1998), Denmark (2002), Norway (2005), Sweden (2008) and Germany (2009), while France is reported to be in the process of establishing such a unit. Within Europe and North America only two suspects have been brought to justice without the work of a special unit.

A unit would cost about the same as the Metropolitan Police spends every year on kennelling dangerous dogs (£1.34m). While public spending is being cut at the moment it might be possible to adopt the financing model for the Overseas Anti-Corruption Unit - which is funded by DFID.

Please write to your MP - we have provided a simple template you can adapt, therefore the whole process should take about five minutes.

enforcement Ever wondered why so few suspected war criminals are ever brought to justice? The Enforcement of International Criminal Law, by Justice Richard Goldstone and others, sets out a plan for how to reform both the 'architecture' (e.g. new treaties) of international criminal law and its 'plumbing' (e.g. specialist war crimes units).
