25 June 06 – Over 600 students from five schools took part in a march staged in Rwanda’s capital, Kigali, to commemorate the 1994 genocide and raise funds for the educational work of the Aegis Trust.
The march, fronted by the brass band of the National Guard, snaked its way from the St Famille Church – where terrified Tutsis sought precarious refuge during the genocide – to the Kigali Memorial Centre, established by Aegis in 2004 at the behest of Kigali City Council. The Centre overlooks mass graves where the 250,000 murdered in Kigali alone lie buried.
Among the students taking part in the march were survivors, as well as the children of some of Rwanda’s most senior politicians. Following their arrival at the Kigali Memorial Centre, the Head of the Student Council presented a cheque to Aegis for the funds raised. The students were then addressed by the Minister of Youth, Sport and Culture, who called on them to help build a better future.
